The E-Rezept is an important measure for digitizing the healthcare system in Germany. It has the potential to simplify and automate many manual and tedious steps in the prescription issuing and billing process. Prequalified providers must update their infrastructure to process the E-Rezept. For manufacturers who are not yet prequalified, there is an incentive to also become prequalified and enter the market. We support you on the way to E-Rezept implementation in your business.

End-to-End Process

Step 1
Issuing the E-Rezept in a doctor’s practice
- HCP creates E-Rezept in the practice management system (PVS) as usual
- HCP signs the E-Rezept electronically with his health professional card (eHBA) and loads it into the E-Rezept memory of the telematics infrastructure
- The insured person is asked whether he or she uses the E-Rezept app
  
  If yes: The E-Rezept is automatically displayed in the E-Rezept app of the insured person
  
  If no: The insured person must receive a paper printout with a QR code to redeem the E-Rezept
Step 2
Administration in the E-Rezept app
- The E-Rezept is securely stored in the telematics infrastructure
- The insured can track all open and redeemed prescriptions in the app
- To redeem the E-Rezept, the insured can go to a pharmacy or send the E-Rezept digitally to a pharmacy for later pickup or delivery
Step 3
Redeeming the E-Rezept at a pharmacy
- There are three ways to redeem the E-Rezept:
- Scanning the QR code from the E-Rezept app.
- Scanning the QR code on the paper printout
- Scanning the eGK (this retrieves all of the insured’s stored prescriptions).
- Prescription is loaded from the TI into the merchandise management system
- Provision of the service

How can patients redeem the E-Rezept?

Insured persons have 3 options for redeeming the E-Rezept:

redeeming via QR code in the E-Rezept app
redeeming via QR code on paper printout

scanning the eGK (all prescriptions are loaded from the TI and not just one as with the QR codes)

As a despensing service provider, how do I process the E-Rezept?

By scanning the prescription code, the prescription is automatically loaded into the merchandise management system. gematik maintains an overview of all compatible primary systems.

What changes in the billing process with billing service providers?

In general, the process becomes more digital and efficient. Many manual and analog steps, such as the collection of prescriptions by a service provider and the scanning of prescriptions, are eliminated. Automatic checking for formal and (in some cases) technical errors during the prescription filling process can reduce the number of retaxations.

As a service provider, which hardware is required?

In order to process and bill the E-Rezept, all healthcare providers need:

A computer
A connector: similar to a router, also offered as a cloud solution by some providers
An eHealth card terminal to scan the IDs and cards.

IMPORTANT: All components must be approved by gematik.

As a service provider, which software is required?

In order to process and bill the E-Rezept, all healthcare providers need:

A compatible primary system (gematik maintains an overview of all compatible primary systems).
An E-Rezept billing software (there are no gematik specifications here)
A VPN that guarantees secure access to the telematics infrastructure

IMPORTANT: All components must be approved by gematik.

As a service provider, which means of identification do I need?

In order to process and bill the E-Rezept, all healthcare providers need:

Institution ID card (SMB-C): ID card that identifies service provider institution.
Electronic Health Professional Card (eHBA): Card that identifies the service provider (e.g. a doctor or pharmacist).

IMPORTANT: All components must be approved by gematik.
